Information about MIDDLESBROUGH Home to the famous 18th Century explorer, Captain James Cook, his life is celebrated at the award-winning Captain Cook Birthplace Museum. Albert Park, or �The Peoples Park�, was donated to the town by a wealthy benefactor in Victorian times and it retains many of its original buildings and features. Its near 100 acres comprise walking trails, green spaces and sports facilities, including tennis, sailing and fishing. Attractions include the Dorman Museum, with exhibitions and activities illustrating the cultural and natural world. Opening soon is the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, a major new modern and contemporary art gallery opening in 2006. mima will host an internationally important programme of the very best of art and craft from 1900 to the present day. It will also provide a focal point for the town�s art and craft collections for the first time. Middlesbrough�s most notable landmark is the Transporter Bridge over the Tees. Not actually a bridge, it is an enormous structure which straddles the river. The huge cradle, carrying passengers and vehicles, hangs by cable from the underside of the bridge and transports its cargo across the river. It is one of only two examples left in the country and is a rare example of Britain�s past engineering feats.
